In the United States, box-board paper production fell 8.6% in the third quarter

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released its third-quarter 2022 paper production results.

Total box board paper production decreased by 8.6% in the third quarter compared to the third quarter of 2021. Compared to the first nine months of the same period in 2021, the decrease was 9%.
 


New supply of box board paper (domestic production plus imports) declined by 7.3% compared to the third quarter of 2021 and by 2.3% year-to-date.

The third quarter box board paper operation rate was 86.0%, down 8.3 percentage points from the previous quarter.

The median operating rate for the quarter was 91.4 percent, down 4.6 percentage points from the second quarter of 2022.

Total paperboard production increased 3% year-over-year for the current period and 2% year-over-year for the first nine months, while carton operating rate was 95.7%, up 1.2 percentage points from the beginning of the third quarter and up 0.6 percentage points year-to-date.
